>> it was a mistake for president obama to ask him about that, it was wrong for president obama not to say, mitt romney, are you calling out the republicans who are voting for the jobs bill in the senate? president obama left a whole bunch of stuff on the table that he could have brought up. he absolutely should have asked him about it because it's a central issue when you talk about where we stand in this country. i simply say to ali, i know he's your guy. >> he's even saying preexistent conditions will be covered, but people who lose their job can keep their health insurance for a time. that's not what people think of when they think of a preexisting condition. >> it's something that when republicans repeal obamacare and try to replace it, they'll have to come up with that replacement so people don't gain in the system -- >> so was he lying or mistaken about his own policy? >> there is a provision in there, anderson, that will cover a portion of the people who don't have health insurance. if you paid your premiums and you have health insurance, you can't be turned down. what he's tal

obama left. >> what about obama's body language at the end. did he seem to be hunched over a little bit? >> he did. >> very interesting. >> again, i do feel like he realized he didn't do well. and there was a point even in his closing statements where you felt he had given up. he was so weary at that close and didn't do what i wanted him to do and that was to look straight at that cram. >> the next debate will be in a town hall

obama became president, the unemployment rate would be 10%. if we had same percentage of people looking for work today looking when unemployment rate peaked at 10% the unemployment rate today would still be 9.7 using that household data. which means most effective employment program the obama administration has been able to come up with is persuade people to leave the labor force. mr. obama managed to drive down number of adults that want a job. that is a great way to drive unemployment down. i would think the other guest would consider that. melissa: gary, last word before we go. >> look the employment rate has risen in last few months. there is no doubt about that. i don't understand this labor force participants rate idea. yes the participation rate is lower when the economy was expanding strongly. yes, that's true but the fact of the matter is, employment has been rising over the last three years, period. it is just not rising fast enough to put a big a dent in unemployment rate as we would all like to see, period. melissa: gentlemen, grea

when you went head-to-head with obama in 2008, the polls said 51% obama, 38% mccain. do you think you would have done better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then senator obama had no record to defend, and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was -- i think very legitimately, attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that he pointed -- the failure of dodd-frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time, but one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit or something of a boost today. >> we've got the vp debate com

you know, mitt romney during the debate criticized president obama when president obama criticized how much money is given to the oil industry. many people were upset that the president then fired back and said hey, listen, we're starting something with green energy. if you're trying to get a whole new energy sector off the ground, don't you need federal dollars behind it at least at first? >> there are a lot more official ways of doing it than giving money to your friends and having those companies go bankrupt. the reason why it's such a sore point with the administration is they've had a lot of very high profile disasters, solyndra, fisker, and the rest. i think the president, rather than saying yes, we have to subsidize my friends, would do better to say that i think his line is that he is in favor of an all of the above sort of energy policy. but it's really not the case that we're doing better. we had a higher growth rate in 2010. the reason why that rate is going down is because people are giving up and dropping out of the jobs -- the job market. so i think that the essential arg
